The song of the black capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is easily recognizable, as well as it's distinctive plumage. The official bird of New Brunswick, this small passerine is capable of lowering it's body temperature to conserve energy during cold winter days.

It's diet consists mainly of seeds, berries and insects, some of which are hidden in caches such as under bark, dead leaves or piles of conifer needles. Perhaps the bird seen here on the painting was looking for his hidden cache of food?
