"Sleeping Jaguar"- original watercolor painting
The jaguar (Panthera onca) lives mainly in the jungles of Central and South America.  Often confused with the leopard, the jaguar’s brownish/yellow coat has dark rosette markings with small dots or irregular shapes within the larger rosettes.  A melanistic (black) form is common in certain parts of its range. The jaguar is a protected species and is considered threatened.  It is estimated that only 15,000 cats are left in the wild.  In the 50’s and 60’s, the jaguar’s main threat was the fur trade, when almost 20,000 animals were killed annually.  Today, the main threat is deforestation and fragmentation of their natural habitat.
