Barney will always have a special place in my heart. I first met him as a young teenager, while working my regular paper route; he was the mailman's worst nightmare as he would fiercely guard his home by growling and barking and lunging to the end of his chain until his master came out to calm him down. Since I was going to be the regular paper girl, his master didn't want me to have trouble with his dog so he invited me to meet him. Barney sniffed me over and quickly realized I was more fun to play with than to growl at!  We quickly became friends and every time I'd walk into his yard to deliver the paper, Barney would jump and whine until he was let out to greet me. Barney's owners were an older couple who could not take him out for walks or play with him very often. Since my parents didn't want to have a dog, I realized this was the second best to having one of our own. I started walking and training Barney to the best of my abilities. I didn't have any formal training or any experience training dogs so I did the best I could from what I read in books.  We would spend endless hours walking in the woods and fields by my home. I made sure to always wash or clean Barney at the end of each walk so as to not bring him home full of mud or grass. After all, I felt so grateful to Barney's owners that they let me play and walk with Barney. I eventually had to leave for university and I sadly missed my faithful companion. When I would go home during study breaks I made sure to visit Barney and the old couple. I would always thank them for allowing me to take care of Barney. Eventually, the day came when I received news that Barney was suffering with arthritis and had to be put down.  I was deeply saddened and missed him dearly. To this day, I am forever grateful to the nice old couple who allowed me to develop loving friendships that I otherwise would not have known.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you Mr. and Mrs. Timberg!   More earlier works
