"Canadian Veterinary Oath"- original colored pencil drawing

This unique portrait was commissioned as a gift by Dr. Stephen Shaw and presented to the veterinarians and staff of Park Range Veterinary Services in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in thanks for their outstanding care, compassion and service provided to their beloved dog Sophie and their family during the last weeks of her life, and for the years of outstanding care provided to all of their pets. The "Canadian Veterinary  Oath" was used with special permission from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.

The use of a scroll as a backdrop creates a wonderful 3-D effect and is well suited to this piece. Behind the "Canadian Veterinary Oath" appears the caduceus which has become known as a symbol for medicine. The wand of Hermes, surmounted by wings, comprises of a short herald's staff entwined by two serpents in the form of a double helix. The middle of the caduceus sports the letter "V" which represent veterinary medicine.   The animals depicted include the following (common name, Latin name):   -scarlet macaw (Ara macao) -Vietnamese Pot-bellied pig (Sus scrofa) -cat (Felis catus) -fancy rat (Rattus norvegicus) -Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) -Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) -African hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) -corn snake (Elaphe guttata) -ferret (Mustela putorius furo) -guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) -rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) -budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) -dog (Canis lupus familiaris) -White's tree frog (Litoria caerulea)

The portrait looks absolutely spectacular, Colette! The colours are riveting and the arrangement of the animals is not only intriguing and appealing, but demonstrates the great deal of thought and care that you put into the design (I absolutely love the animals on the backs of others, particularly those that one wouldn't expect to find, such as a rat on the back of a cat!!). The delicate addition of floral work really ties this section together, and adds further brightness and life, which is exactly what I wanted to have flowing from the piece. Then, of course, all of this juxtaposed upon the very meaningful oath (thank you so much, again, for thinking of this as a focus for the portrait) creates what is nothing less than a masterpiece that captures precisely the complex sentiments that I wish to express and memorialize to the women and men of Park Range Vet Service.
