The sketch looks pretty rough at this stage. I've  lightly traced the outline on black velour paper using a grey pastel pencil.		I start drawing the eyes and only once I am satisfied I feel I can continue with the other features of the face.
Update 3		Update 4
In this stage, the dog is really starting to "come to life" as we say. The highlights on the shiny fur helps achieve a more realistic,  3-D look.		The scruffy fur on the neck was achieved using backwards strokes towards the root of the hair. I also added more contrast to the nose

Lastly, I fill in the background and accentuate highlights on the dog.
